10 Upcoming Anime Sequels in 2021

2020 was a great year for anime, but next year is looking even more exciting as many of the current fan favorites will be getting exciting sequels.

With 2020 coming to a close, there have been a ton of sequel announcements for the upcoming year. Just about every ongoing anime fans can think of is set to make a return, with many of them already set to pop up in the same season.

Everything from the popular isekai genre to Shonen Jump hits are posed to make 2021 a year that anime fans can't help but be excited for. There are tons of sequels in the works (as well as new shows).

Re:Zero — Starting Life In Another World


The first half of Re:Zero's second season debuted in the Summer of 2020, introducing new characters and revelations, as well as showing fans their first glimpse at Satella, who flared up pages of theories on sites like Reddit. While the show will likely finish the Sanctuary arc, fans can look forward to even more twists and turns that will make the whole story that much more entertaining to watch.

The Promised Neverland


The Promised Neverland officially wrapped its manga run up back in the summer when it came to an explosive conclusion. Anime-only fans will now be treated to what many readers consider their favorite arc in manga in the second season. The first season left off with Emma, Ray, and several children escaping the farm and running into the forest in hopes of not getting eaten by the monsters that were trying to harvest them.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime


Reincarnated as a Slime was an isekai that literally caught the anime community off guard with how good the plot was. It followed the classic isekai formula, but instead of being reincarnated normally, the main character was turned into a slime.As it turned out, though, anything that Rimuru absorbed he gained the powers of, eventually allowing him to take a human form and found a nation where monsters could live in peace.

Fruits Basket


Fruits Basket was an incredibly popular series in the early 2000s that never got fully adapted. In 2019 though, the series had a full adaptation announced, and now the third and final season is going to debut in 2021. The previous two seasons feature the missing zodiac members from the original and tapped into the manga's darker story elements that had never before been translated into the anime.

Zombie Land Saga


Zombie Land Saga was a comedy show that surprised fans with its fantastic premise and witty humor. In the show, six girls are brought back to life as zombies and tasked with being idols in order to help save the Saga region of Japan. The girls must keep their undead identity a secret while learning to perform together. Their manager, Tatsumi, also helps them out by yelling loudly and booking them just about any singing job possible.

Attack On Titan


Attack on Titan has long been one of the most popular anime series to ever launch. What at first seemed like nothing more than a tactical horror show quickly jumped into the worlds of politics and hidden conspiracies. The next season is set to debut in winter of 2021 and will finish up the anime. For those who have been following the series since the beginning, the conclusion of the anime will bring some bittersweet feelings.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero


The Rising of The Shield Hero takes the isekai concept and once again throws in an interesting twist. The main hero is granted what should be a pretty useless device, a shield, but as things tend to go in these situations, it turns out to be a great piece of equipment.The world of Rising of The Shield Hero is filled with fun characters, great lore, and beautiful visuals that helped separate the show from other fantasy anime on the market.

My Hero Academia


My Hero Academia doesn't tend to run non-stop like many other series from the popular Shonen Jump magazine. The series has slowly been trickling out anime seasons since the beginning that have only helped to increase the hype behind the show. While this isn't likely even going to be close to the last season, fans can be assured that the fifth season will be a fun ride with even more superhero goodness.

Log Horizon is a series that started back in 2013 and has only had two seasons, leading many fans to give up hope for a third. Luckily though, 2021 is bringing the third season of the show that picks up right where the last left off. Log Horizon takes a much different approach to the "trapped in a game" genre with more focus on a more mature story with heavy adventure tones.

Beastars


Beastars was a Netflix anime that starred anamorphic animals that all went to school together. As it would happen though, not all carnivores and herbivores can live together peacefully, which eventually led to a murder. The show explored the relationship between the different species of animals while using both slice-of-life and psychological themes to push along its intriguing plot.
